Math Comparisons
Ratios vs. Percentages
While both ratios and percentages describe proportional relationships, their mathematical bases and standard use cases differ significantly.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Ratio (A : B) | Percentage (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Compares two separate parts to each other. | Compares one part to a standardized total of 100. |
| Base | Flexible (depends on sum of terms: A + B). | Fixed (always base 100). |
| Example | 1 : 3 (1 part syrup to 3 parts water). | 25% syrup (1 out of 4 total parts). |
| Common Use | Recipes, gear ratios, aspect ratios, mixtures. | Discounts, interest rates, probability, grades. |
How to Convert Between Them
Ratio to Percentage:
Sum the ratio terms (e.g. 3 : 2 → total = 5). Divide each term by the sum: (3 ÷ 5) × 100 = 60%.
Percentage to Ratio:
Compare target percentage to remaining balance (e.g. 75% → 75 : 25 → GCD = 25 → 3 : 1).
