Ratios vs. Fractions
Discover the conceptual differences between part-to-part ratios and part-to-whole fractions in mathematics.
The Fundamental Distinction
While both use numbers and division, they represent fundamentally different mathematical relationships:
Ratio (A : B)
Compares two distinct parts. If you have 3 red marbles and 5 blue marbles, the ratio of red to blue is 3 : 5.
Part to Part
Fraction (A / Total)
Compares one part to the entire whole. In the same bag (total = 8 marbles), red marbles make up 3/8 of the bag.
Part to Whole
Converting Between Fractions and Ratios
- From Ratio to Fraction: For ratio
A : B, the fraction of Part A isA / (A + B), and the fraction of Part B isB / (A + B). - From Fraction to Ratio: If a recipe is
2/7butter, then butter is 2 parts and non-butter ingredients are 5 parts (7 - 2). The ratio of butter to other ingredients is 2 : 5.
