        What is Final Drive Ratio?

The final drive ratio is the combined gear reduction from the engine crankshaft all the way to the drive wheels. It multiplies the individual ratios of the transmission gear, transfer case (on 4WD vehicles), and rear axle differential. In first gear with a 3.50:1 transmission ratio and a 3.73:1 axle ratio, the final drive ratio is 3.50 × 3.73 = 13.06:1 — meaning the engine crankshaft rotates 13.06 times for every single wheel rotation.

The final drive ratio directly determines the trade-off between torque at the wheels and vehicle speed. A higher overall ratio (larger number) delivers more torque multiplication for acceleration and hill climbing but limits top speed. A lower ratio (smaller number, as in highway overdrive) allows higher speeds and better fuel economy but reduces pulling force. Understanding this ratio is essential for matching drivetrain gearing to your vehicle's intended use.

        Formler & Ekvationer som används

Denna Final Drive Ratio Calculator använder 5 kärnekvationer:

        1 Final Drive Ratio ▼
FDR = Transmission Ratio × Transfer Case Ratio × Axle Ratio

        3.5 × 1.0 × 3.73 = 13.06:1 in first gear (2WD without transfer case).

2 RPM at Road Speed ▼
        RPM = (Speed × FDR × 336) / Tire Diameter

        At 60 mph, FDR 2.61 (overdrive), 30" tires: RPM = (60 × 2.61 × 336) / 30 = 1755 RPM.

3 Road Speed at RPM ▼
        Speed = (RPM × Tire Diameter) / (FDR × 336)

        At 3000 RPM, FDR 3.73, 28" tires: Speed = (3000 × 28) / (3.73 × 336) = 67 mph.

        Vanliga Frågor

How does final drive ratio affect acceleration vs. top speed? ▼

Higher final drive ratios (larger numbers like 13:1 in first gear) multiply engine torque dramatically, providing strong acceleration from a stop. Lower ratios (like 2.5:1 in overdrive) allow higher top speeds but deliver less wheel torque. The ideal drivetrain offers high ratios in low gears for acceleration and low ratios in top gear for cruising.

What is a transfer case ratio? ▼

The transfer case in 4WD/AWD vehicles provides two ranges: high range (typically 1:1, no additional reduction) and low range (typically 2.5:1 to 4.0:1 additional reduction). Low range multiplies the final drive ratio by the low-range factor, providing extreme torque for off-road crawling and steep terrain.

How do I calculate engine RPM at highway speed? ▼

        Use the formula: RPM = (Speed in MPH × Final Drive Ratio × 336) ÷ Tire Diameter in inches. For example, at 70 MPH with a 2.61:1 overdrive final drive ratio and 30-inch tires: RPM = (70 × 2.61 × 336) ÷ 30 = 2,047 RPM.

Does changing tire size affect the effective final drive ratio? ▼

Yes, significantly. Larger tires act as a gear reduction (lowering the effective ratio) because the wheel travels more distance per rotation. Going from 30-inch to 33-inch tires reduces the effective ratio by 10%, weakening acceleration and towing power. Re-gearing the axle compensates for this change.

What final drive ratio is best for towing? ▼

For heavy towing, you want a final drive ratio of 10:1 to 15:1 in the tow-start gear. This typically means a 3.73 or 4.10 axle ratio combined with a low first-gear transmission ratio (3.0-4.0:1). Avoid relying on overdrive gears for towing on grades — lock out overdrive and use a gear with sufficient torque multiplication.

What is a crawl ratio and why does it matter? ▼

The crawl ratio is the maximum final drive ratio available: first gear × low-range transfer case × axle ratio. For off-road vehicles, it determines how slowly and powerfully you can crawl over obstacles. A Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has approximately a 73:1 crawl ratio (4.0 × 4.0 × 4.56), providing excellent control on technical terrain.

How do automatic transmission torque converters affect the final drive? ▼

A torque converter multiplies torque at stall (up to 2.0-2.5×) and during initial acceleration, effectively increasing the final drive ratio during launch. This extra multiplication disappears once the converter locks up (usually above 30-40 MPH), so it only affects low-speed situations.

What is overdrive and how does it affect final drive ratio? ▼

Overdrive is any gear with a ratio less than 1.0:1, meaning the output shaft turns faster than the input. A 0.70:1 overdrive with a 3.73 axle gives a 2.61:1 final drive — much lower than the 3.73:1 in direct drive. This reduces RPM at highway speed for better fuel economy and lower noise.

Can I calculate final drive ratio for an electric vehicle? ▼

EVs typically have a single fixed-ratio reduction gear (usually 7:1 to 11:1) between the motor and wheels. This is their final drive ratio. There is no multi-speed transmission or transfer case. Calculate it simply as the single gear ratio, or divide motor RPM by wheel RPM at a known speed.

How do I choose between a 3.73 and 4.10 axle for my final drive? ▼

If your primary use is highway cruising and light towing, 3.73 provides a better balance of fuel economy and adequate torque. If you frequently tow heavy loads, run larger tires, or need strong acceleration, 4.10 delivers more torque at the cost of 200-300 higher RPM at cruise. Calculate both final drives in your most-used gear to compare.
