        What is Axle Ratio?

The axle ratio — also called the rear-end ratio, differential ratio, or final drive ratio — measures how many times the driveshaft must rotate to turn the axle (and wheels) once. A 3.73:1 axle ratio means the driveshaft spins 3.73 revolutions for every single rotation of the rear wheels, multiplying engine torque by that same factor at the wheel.

Truck and SUV owners often choose numerically higher ratios like 3.73:1 or 4.10:1 for better towing grunt and quicker off-the-line acceleration, while highway cruisers prefer numerically lower ratios like 3.08:1 or 3.23:1 to keep RPMs down for quiet, fuel-efficient cruising. The ratio is physically determined by the number of teeth on the ring gear divided by the teeth on the pinion gear inside the differential housing.

        使用される計算公式・方程式

        この計算ツールは5つの主要な公式を使用しています:

        1 Axle Ratio Calculation ▼
Axle Ratio = Ring Gear Teeth / Pinion Gear Teeth

        A ring gear with 41 teeth and pinion with 11 teeth: Axle Ratio = 41/11 = 3.73:1.

2 Engine RPM at Speed ▼
        RPM = (Speed × Axle Ratio × Trans Ratio × 336) / Tire Diameter

        At 60 mph, 3.73 axle, 0.70 overdrive, 28-inch tires: RPM = (60 × 3.73 × 0.70 × 336) / 28 = 1878 RPM.

3 Effective Ratio (with Transmission) ▼
Effective Ratio = Axle Ratio × Transmission Gear Ratio

3.73 axle × 2.97 first gear = 11.08:1 overall ratio in first gear.

        よくある質問 (FAQ)

What axle ratio is best for towing? ▼

For heavy towing (7,000+ lbs), use 3.73:1 or 4.10:1. These ratios multiply engine torque more effectively, making it easier to pull heavy loads, maintain speed on grades, and start from stops. The tradeoff is 1-3 MPG lower highway fuel economy compared to 3.08 or 3.23 ratios.

How does axle ratio affect fuel economy? ▼

Lower numerical ratios (3.08, 3.23) improve highway fuel economy because the engine turns fewer RPM at cruising speed. A 3.08 axle might run 1,600 RPM at 70 MPH, while a 4.10 runs 2,100 RPM. The higher RPM burns more fuel per mile, typically 2-4 MPG worse on the highway.

How do I determine my vehicle's axle ratio? ▼

Check the door jamb sticker, owner's manual, or RPO codes. Alternatively, jack up one rear wheel (with the other on the ground, transmission in neutral), rotate the raised wheel two full turns, and count driveshaft rotations. If the driveshaft turns 7.46 times, you have a 3.73 ratio (7.46 ÷ 2).

Can I change my axle ratio? ▼

Yes. Swapping the ring and pinion gear set changes the axle ratio. Common swaps include 3.08 to 3.73 for towing, or 3.55 to 4.10 for off-road trucks with larger tires. Expect to pay $800-$1,500 for parts and professional installation with proper setup.

        What is a limited-slip differential? ▼

A limited-slip differential (LSD) distributes torque to both rear wheels when one loses traction, unlike an open diff that sends all power to the spinning wheel. The axle ratio is the same regardless of differential type — LSD only affects how torque is split between left and right wheels.

What is the difference between 3.73 and 4.10 axle ratios? ▼

A 4.10 ratio provides approximately 10% more torque multiplication at the wheels than 3.73, resulting in quicker acceleration and better towing grunt. However, at 70 MPH the engine spins about 200 RPM faster, increasing fuel consumption. Choose 4.10 for heavy towing or large tires, 3.73 for a balanced tow/economy compromise.

Do I need to re-gear after installing bigger tires? ▼

If your tires increase by more than 10% in diameter, re-gearing is strongly recommended. Larger tires effectively lower your axle ratio, causing sluggish acceleration, higher transmission temperatures, and the feeling that the engine is always laboring. Multiply your original ratio by (new tire diameter ÷ old tire diameter) to find the compensating ratio.

How do I calculate engine RPM at highway speed? ▼

        Use the formula: RPM = (MPH × Axle Ratio × Transmission Ratio × 336) ÷ Tire Diameter (inches). For example, 70 MPH with 3.73 axle, 0.70 overdrive, and 32-inch tires: (70 × 3.73 × 0.70 × 336) ÷ 32 = 1,916 RPM.

What axle ratio do I need for 37-inch tires? ▼

If your vehicle originally had 32-inch tires with a 3.73 axle, you need: 3.73 × (37 ÷ 32) = 4.31. The closest commercial ratio is 4.30 or 4.56. For daily driving with occasional off-road, 4.30 works well. For frequent trail use or heavy loads, 4.56 is better.

What does the ring and pinion tooth count mean? ▼

The ring gear is the large gear bolted to the differential carrier, and the pinion is the small gear at the end of the driveshaft. Dividing ring teeth by pinion teeth gives the axle ratio. A 41-tooth ring with 11-tooth pinion = 3.73:1. Manufacturers use specific tooth count combinations to achieve standard ratios.

Is a higher axle ratio better for off-roading? ▼

Generally yes. Higher numerical ratios (4.10, 4.56, 4.88) provide more torque at low speeds for crawling over obstacles. Combined with low-range transfer case ratios (2.72:1 or 4.0:1), you get extreme torque multiplication for technical terrain. However, very high ratios limit highway top speed and fuel economy.
